Multi-split system air conditioning uses 1 outdoor with multiple indoor units connected, allowing multiple spaces to be conditioned independently with only 1 outdoor unit – however simultaneous heating and cooling is not possible (heating in 1 room, cooling in another). The multi-split system is a newer variant of the trusty split system, allowing multiple indoor units to be connected to a single outdoor unit. Like the split, the multi-split is extremely flexible with many indoor unit options available. Each indoor unit has independent temperature control via its own controller, with the only limitation of this system being the inability to cool and heat simultaneously. Generally simultaneous cooling and heating is not required in smaller buildings, whereby the whole building is most likely to require either cooling or heating. In larger commercial premises it is quite common for some areas of the building to require whilst others may need heating. This can be the result of solar gain to certain areas via glazing or other heat loads generated by machinery and / or people in some areas of a building – In this instance, a VRF system would be ideal solution.
